Why film in the Czech Republic?

The Czech Republic has been a film country since the very beginning of global cinematography. In the early 20th century, the country already had modern film companies, professional studios and experienced filmmakers – which have maintained their high level of professional work to this day. The Czech Republic also offers truly beautiful and varied locations within fairly short distances!

Studios

The world-renowned Barrandov Studios were built in the 1930s. They were the most modern studio in Europe at the time and became a symbol of the Czech film industry.

Today’s Czech studios are also world-class. The MAX film studio at Barrandov, with an area of more than 4000m², is one of the largest studios in Europe. The studio’s 160,000m² of exterior areas are used to construct outdoor sets to meet any production requirements. There are also many other studios available.

Locations

The Czech Republic is also known in the film industry for its unique locations. It offers an array of diverse and easily accessible film locations in its relatively small area.

Film crew

Building sets, rentals, preparation of props and costumes – all of the traditional production trades work very well, even in the most challenging period productions! Local cameramen, stuntmen and other film professionals also have a good reputation!

Film incentives

In 2010, the Czech Republic introduced incentives through refunds on Czech and some foreign eligible costs. The Czech Republic is currently one of the busiest European centres for film and television production.

Feature films, documentaries as well as animated productions that meet the cultural criteria of the State Cinematography Fund can receive a 20% refund on qualifying filming costs in the Czech Republic and up to 66% off of Czech taxes, without limitations on the grant per project.
